I'm a self taught artist living in Alabama with my wife and daughter. I began to take my art seriously in 1995 working with clay, then metal and later began painting. I became disabled in '97, hit head-on by a Ford Explorer. I was on my bike and hit at 50mph, b4-&-Fter pics here - [link] Since the accident I've had much thought about what could have happened and count my many blessings. I've learned to be more appreciative every day that I almost didn't get to live.
In my art I like to do work that inspires people, to engage my creativity, to release the energy I feel leaving it in concrete form for others to ponder. I like to think, to solve problems, to make interesting things from simple objects.
My metal sculpture is whimsical and reflects my lighthearted nature. My paintings are more introspective and depict more of my raw emotions and deeper thoughts.
I also like to write, take pictures, play music, explore different facets of my creativity and life in general.

My latest fascination

Wed Oct 7, 2009, 12:11 AM
I've been toying around with taking ultra-macro shots with my digital camera. The results are pretty amazing considering they were shot with a cheap $100 Olympus and a homemade lens adapter I made with a binocular lens and film canister. Details here - [link]
Following some advice from a friend of mine, who is a professional photographer, I substituted the clear Fuji style canister with a black Kodak can. This blocks stray light and makes the shots clearer. The Tree Frog was only about 3/4" long and I couldn't get all of him in the shot. I cut the canister down to get the binocular lens closer to the camera lens, this allowed me to zoom out without the can in the shot. Since the day I took the Dragonfly I haven't seen another one. I've been trying to get another shot with the cut down can so I could get the whole dragonfly. Maybe they're gone for the season. Oh well, at least this one left a parting shot.
I haven't been doing much painting lately and even less metal work. My little girl is almost three and a half so I've got more time to spend creating. Unfortunately when I moved I lost the metal shop and working in the dirt out back isn't very inspiring. My easel is set up behind the toilet in a cramped bathroom, which until very recently had a crappy fan. At least now I can paint when the mood strikes.
Something's gotta give!! Either we're gonna move soon or I'm gonna build a shop on this little postage stamp of a yard my wife built her house on. I don't miss my house as much as the garage...

Well, wanted just to express my support, it's good you haven't lost your will to live and to create after the accident.
And BTW, scrap metal art FTW! :)

Thanks for the kind words!
I like your work, it's interesting.
To get better pics try shooting outside on a cloudy day and maybe put the piece on a black cloth for contrast. If it's a close up, try a macro setting if your camera has one.
Take care!
Dave

Hehe, my mobile camera has macro for sure :D Well, the main problem is that usually on days I work, therefore I cannot take my stuff outside. Well, at least current photos save the day, and there's a decent camera somewhere in the future waiting, for sure :) thanks for tips!
